Β

Bereavement Guide

When someone dies, it can be overwhelming and difficult to know what to do next. Our step by step guide tells you exactly what you need to from registration to funeral plans.

Funeral Plans

A funeral plan is an easy way to arrange the funeral you want in advance. A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director’s services included in your plan.

Tailored to your needs, with compassion at every step

We offer a wide range of services each one designed to reflect the unique life and legacy of your loved one.

Whether you need assistance with planning a service, arranging transportation, or making decisions about burial or cremation, we’re here to offer guidance, compassion, and support.

Funeral Services

The loss of a loved one is a very emotional and painful experience and you may find yourself dealing with feelings that are new to you.

If you’ve never had to arrange a funeral before, it can be hard to know where to turn. We understand how important it is for families and friends to come together and comfort one another.

We welcome you, your loved one and your family into our care and our experienced, caring members of staff will help to guide you through the process of planning an appropriate funeral which celebrates the life of your friend or relative.

Direct Cremation

Direct Cremation is the term used in the funeral industry for the simplest type of cremation available. It is a cremation with no funeral service or ceremony beforehand. Direct cremation is often the most cost-effective option offered by funeral directors.

Β
After death, the deceased is received into the care of the funeral directors, placed into a β€˜simple’ cremation type coffin, whilst always ensuring the deceased’s dignity is maintained at all times, arrangements are then made with a local crematorium. The deceased is transported by hearse to the crematorium on the day of cremation and taken into the crematorium in a traditional way. After the cremation, the cremated remains are returned to the deceased’s loved ones, to be kept or scattered according to the wishes of the person who has died.

Burial or Cremation

Burial

Following a funeral service, the traditional burial process begins with the procession to the cemetery or burial site. Pallbearers, sometimes close family or friends, will carry the coffin to its final resting place.Β

As the coffin is gently lowered into the ground, some people may say a few words, scatter soil on top or lay flowers to say goodbye. A wake is commonly held afterwards to honour the deceased. The burial plot will then be filled and marked with a headstone to honour the person resting there.

Burial is favoured by some for its tradition and the lasting memorial it provides, where loved ones can visit and potentially be laid to rest together.

Cremation

After the funeral service, the cremation process may begin with the committal, where the coffin is either concealed by a curtain or lowered from view. Alternatively, the coffin might be removed after guests leave, allowing the family a private farewell. A wake then may follow after the service, if chosen by the person who has passed and their family.

The body and coffin are then transferred to a cremator. A high heat is applied inside a specially designed furnace, leaving ashes behind. These ashes are processed and returned to the family in an urn, box, or scatter tube.

Cremation is sometimes chosen for its flexibility. You can scatter the ashes of your loved one in a special place or they can be kept with you. Ashes can also be used in multiple memorial options like being turned into fireworks, jewellery and even added to ink for a tattoo.

Pre-Paid Funerals

A funeral plan is an easy way to arrange the funeral you want in advance. A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director’s services included in your plan.

As customers often tell us, that can bring peace of mind to you and your family. A plan from Golden Charter also includes an allowance towards third party costs. These are essential, non-funeral director services such as the cremation or burial fees, plus the minister or officiant’s fee to perform the service.

The value of the allowance included in your plan may grow over time. There will only be more to pay at the time of the funeral if the third party costs exceed the allowance when you buy your plan, or if the costs increase by more than the growth of your plan. At Victoria House Funeral Service, we work in partnership with Golden Charter to provide you with a simple way to plan ahead.

As one of the UK’s largest funeral plan providers, Golden Charter has helped 900,000 people make funeral provisions so we’re completely confident in offering their plans to you.
